Wood girls' swimmers out to win a close one.

The Vikings have been near a Catholic title the past few years, but they are pumped to make this their year.

Look for the Archbishop Wood girls in their tie-dyed shirts on the pool deck.   Look for them out front in the pool.   After placing third in 1998 and a close second last year, the Wood girls' swim team is aiming for its first   Catholic League championship since 1991.   The meet will begin tomorrow at Drexel University, with the girls' races set for 1:30 p.m.   The meet will continue at La Salle University on Sunday, with finals for boys and girls at 11 a.m.   "It's going to be close," Wood senior Carol Crouthamel said.   "If we have some of our girls swim our best, we'll be right up there."   Last year, the Vikings won nine of 11 events and finished second in two others but ended up right behind Cardinal O'Hara. Wood (7-1 overall, 7-0 league) beat O'Hara by four points in a dual meet last month, and the two also expect serious competition from Archbishop Ryan this weekend.   "We have a list of the top times in the league and will try to figure out who will swim what," Wood coach Charlie Stillwell said.   "We'll put our kids in the events we think they'll do best.   It's going to be really exciting.   The number-one thing is to have fun."   The Vikings will be having plenty of fun.   A pasta party was held at one of the swimmer's houses last night, and the team members tie-dyed shirts.   They have plans to go out for dinner tonight.   "We're trying to get pumped up and be really positive," Crouthamel said.   Last weekend, the Vikings placed fourth in the Eastern championships.   Senior captains Jillian Fitzgerald, Michelle Long and Nicole Torano and fellow seniors Crouthamel and Mary Skonicki give Wood superior leadership.   Junior Shannon Seckinger and sophomores Theresa Skonicki (Mary's sister) and Kelly Dansbury are also important contributors.   "It's a senior-laden team with a lot of experience and leadership," Stillwell said.   "I'm amazed at how well they've been swimming all year.   The kids have been there four years and have been in close races.   We've had close meets every year we've swum."
