A tired but game La Salle boys' team won its 12th consecutive Catholic League swimming championship at La Salle University yesterday.
The Cardinal O'Hara girls won their third straight league title in the same pool, holding off Archbishop Wood for the second time in the last two years.
On the heels of a draining national prep-school meet at La Salle University the preceding weekend, the Explorers still outclassed the field by winning six of 11 events and scoring 850 points.
Monsignor Bonner finished with 471 points, and O'Hara was third with 379.
"We're a little tired, but we look at [the league meet] as our last hurrah," said La Salle senior captain Mike Harrigan after he won the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 56.64 seconds.
For the second straight year, Wood's girls entered the meet with a potential point advantage over O'Hara, whom the Vikings had defeated during the regular season.
However, Wood could not put away the Lions, who tallied 633 points to the Vikings' 609.
"Absolutely, we're disappointed that we didn't win," Wood coach Charlie Stillwell said.
Wood won eight of 11 events, but O'Hara displayed greater depth in capturing the second through sixth places.
"The upperclassmen did the job and made the difference," O'Hara coach Kevin Speicher said.
O'Hara's Jen Birkenmeier, Samantha White, Kim Myers, and Lauren Conaboy provided their team with its only win by clocking 1:55.49 in the 200 medley relay.
